  24. update. AUG96B.TXT contains a detailed list of the new virus
  25. definitions and a summary of current virus activity around the world.
  26. VIRSPEC.TXT contains information about new virus threats and special
  27. instructions necessary to recover from infection by certain unique
  28. viruses.

  37. **  Intelligent Updater                                             **

  39. As part of its continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer
  40. viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called "Intelligent
  41. Updater" to simplify virus definitions files updates. 
  42.  
  43. Intelligent Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and
  44. installs new virus definitions files automatically. All you have
  45. to do is run the program. 
  46.  
  47. The actual program name for Intelligent Updater, which changes from
  48. month to month, uses the following form: 
  49.  
  50.    mmNAVyy.EXE, where mm is the month and yy is the year.
  51.  
  52. For example, mmNAVyy.EXE -- 08NAV96B.EXE -- is the virus definitions
  53. file update for July, 1996. Later sections of this document give
  54. step-by-step instructions to run the program for each Norton AntiVirus
  55. version.

  60. **  Norton AntiVirus 3.0                                UPDATE.TXT  **

  63. **  IMPORTANT NOTICE: Norton AntiVirus 3.0 (DOS/Windows 3.x)        **
  64. **                                                                  **
  65. **  If your version of Norton AntiVirus 3.0 (NAV.EXE or NAVW.EXE)   **
  66. **  is dated earlier than February 23, 1996, you need to upgrade.   **
  67. **  The Norton AntiVirus upgrade installs the NAV Macro Engine,     **
  68. **  which detects and eliminates a new class of viruses called      **
  69. **  "macro viruses." These viruses infect Microsoft Word document   **
  70. **  and template files.                                             **
  71. **                                                                  **
  72. **  To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus program, download the file     **
  73. **  called "UPDATEME.EXE." Place it in an empty directory and       **
  74. **  execute the file.  This will install the NAV Macro Engine       **
  75. **  automatically. Step-by-step instructions are included with      **
  76. **  the file.                                                       **

  78. **  UPDATEME.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions     **
  79. **  files update are normally found. It is available for download   **
  80. **  from the Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites,           **
  81. **  CompuServe, America Online, or Microsoft Network. You can       **
  82. **  also call Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to order a         **
  83. **  disk set.                                                       **

  87. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files, use one 
  88. of the following procedures. Either procedure will update both the
  89. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 DOS and Windows components.

  92. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from Windows:
  93.  
  94.   1. From the Program Manager File menu, choose Run.
  95.  
  96.   2. Click Browse to locate 08NAV96B.EXE.
  97.  
  98.      This is the virus definitions update program you downloaded.
  99.  
  100.   3. Click OK to close the Browse dialog box.
  101.  
  102.   4. Click OK to run the update program.
  103.  
  104.   5. Follow any instructions displayed on the screen. 
  105.  
  106.      The program will locate your installed version of Norton 
  107.      AntiVirus and perform the virus definitions files update 
  108.      automatically. 
  109.  
  110.   6. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan a drive, directory, or file.
  111.  
  112.      This activates the new virus definitions.
  113.  
  114.   7. Restart your computer so that the Auto-Protect TSR uses the new
  115.      definitions as well.

  117. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from DOS:
  118.  
  119.   1. From a DOS prompt, change to the directory where you downloaded
  120.      the virus definitions files update program.
  121.  
  122.   2. Type 08NAV96B.EXE and press Enter.
  123.  
  124.   3. Follow any instructions displayed on the screen. 
  125.  
  126.      The program will locate your installed version of Norton 
  127.      AntiVirus and perform the virus definitions files update 
  128.      automatically.

  130.   4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan a drive, directory, or file.
  131.  
  132.      This activates the new virus definitions.

  134.   5. Restart your computer so that the Auto-Protect TSR uses the new

  179.      This activates the new virus definitions.

  181.   4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  182.      definitions as well.

  191. **  If your version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare 1.0 is dated    **
  192. **  earlier than July 13, 1994, you need to upgrade your copy of    **
  193. **  Norton AntiVirus.  Using older versions of the NLM with the     **
  194. **  new virus definitions may generate false alarms with garbled    **
  195. **  virus names.                                                    **

  202. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare (versions 1.0 or 2.0)
  203. virus definitions files:

  205.   1. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  206.      AntiVirus for NetWare is installed.

  208.      You must have WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  209.      
  210.   2. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  211.      
  212.      Use either the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare Windows
  213.      configuration component or function keys at the server
  214.      console to disable the NLM.
  215.  
  216.   3. From a DOS prompt, type 08NAV96B.EXE [path] and press Enter.
  217.  
  218.      [path] is the location mapped in step 1.
  219.  
  220.   2. Follow any instructions displayed on the screen. 
  221.  
  222.      The program will perform the virus definitions files
  223.      update automatically.

  225.   3. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.

  227.      Use either the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare Windows
  228.      configuration component or function keys at the server
  229.      console to enable the NLM.

  233. **  Norton AntiVirus Network Manager                    UPDATE.TXT  **

  235. The Norton AntiVirus Network Manager maintains a network copy of
  236. Norton AntiVirus to support distribution. Make sure you have access
  237. rights that allow READ and WRITE operations to the NAV directory.
  238.  
  239. To update Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions files:
  240.  
  241.   1. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  242.      AntiVirus is installed. 
  243.  
  244.      You must have WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  245.  
  246.   2. From a DOS prompt, type 08NAV96B.EXE [path] and press Enter.
  247.  
  248.      [path] is the location mapped in step 1.
  249.  
  250.   3. Follow any instructions displayed on the screen. 
  251.  
  252.      The program will perform the virus definitions files
  253.      update automatically. 
  254.  
  255.   4. Log in as a user with WRITE access to the Navnet directory, start
  256.      Norton AntiVirus from the Navnet directory, and scan a drive,
  257.      directory, or file.
  258.  
  259.      This activates the new virus definitions.
  260.  
  261.   5. If your version of Norton AntiVirus Network Manager (NAVNET.EXE)
  262.      is dated July 1, 1995 or earlier, you must modify your NNS 
  263.      configuration file to install/distribute all update files. The
  264.      default configuration file is _DEFAULT.NNS.
  265.  
  266.      A. Add the following to the [InstallFiles] section of your
  267.         NNS file:
  268.        
  269.         [InstallFiles]
  270.         VIRSP*.DAT
  271.         NAVEX*.*
  272.  
  273.      B. Add the following to the [DefinitionUpdateFiles] section of
  274.         your NNS file:
  275.  
  276.         [DefinitionUpdateFiles]

  278.         NAVEX*.*
  279.    
  280.      These additions ensure that the new virus definitions files are
  281.      distributed across the network.

  287. To update Norton AntiVirus Scanner for NT virus definitions files:

  289.   1. At a command prompt, change to the folder where you downloaded
  290.      the virus definitions files update program.

  292.   2. Type 08NAV96B.EXE and press Enter.

  294.   3. Follow any instructions displayed on the screen. 
  295.  
  296.      The program will locate your installed version of Norton
  297.      AntiVirus and perform the virus definitions files update 
  298.      automatically.

  300.   4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan a drive, folder, or file.

  302.      This activates the new virus definitions.
